DESTINATIONS
KOMODO NATIONAL PARK
MAY – SEPTEMBER
The Komodo National Park is located within the Lesser Sunda Islands and consists of the three large islands of Komodo, Padar and Rinca as well as 26 smaller ones. Home to the world’s largest lizard – the Komodo dragon – the islands have been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A trek guided by park rangers presents the opportunity to spot a dragon in the wild, as well as learning about its hunting habits and territory.
Only accessible by boat, the islands offer unparalleled views and easy hikes on grassy slopes. Guests can enjoy world-class diving and snorkelling in warm turquoise waters abundant with marine life as well as dramatic white sandy beaches.
Pink Beach makes for an unusual stop-off, being one of only a handful in the world. The sand has a soft pink hue, tinged by the high quantity of organ pipe coral growing on the surrounding reefs, which breaks off and washes up on the shore.
RAJA AMAPAT
NOVEMBER – MARCH
Raja Ampat is located off the northwest tip of the Bird’s Head Peninsula on the island of New Guinea in Indonesia’s West Papua province. The archipelago comprises over 1,500 small islands, cays and shoals surrounding the four main islands of Misool, Salawati, Batanta and Waigeo. Incredibly remote and almost undisturbed by humans, the islands are best known for their amazing diversity of marine life with perhaps the richest coral reef ecosystems in the world – a dream for snorkelling or scuba diving.
Whether kayaking through small canals in the mangroves, relaxing on the white sandy beaches, admiring the dramatic views, swimming with acrobatic manta rays and turtles or waterskiing with dolphins, you cannot help but be awed by nature. Raja Ampat’s jungle is full of unique flora and fauna. The rare red birds of paradise perform a ritualistic dance early in the morning – a trek to find them starts at dawn and is a good a chance to meet indigenous communities.
From pre-historic hand paintings to a modern pearl farm, man’s impact here has been low-key and minimal, which looks set to continue thanks to the region’s status as a shark and ray sanctuary as well as a National Park.
BANDA ISLANDS
SEPTEMBER – OCTOBER
MARCH – APRIL
The Banda Islands are a group of small volcanic islands in the Banda Sea about 2,000km east of Java and are part of the Indonesian province of Maluku. Until the mid 19th century the Banda Islands were the world’s only source of the spices nutmeg and mace and as such were hugely valuable to colonialists including the Portuguese, Dutch and British who have all left their mark here.
Fort Nassau and Fort Belgica stand to this day, remnants of the military and administrative bases which were set up to secure control of the spice trade. Wander around at your leisure before visiting the historic church and governor’s house. At the local market, buy freshly-dried Banda nutmeg and taste the local delicacies made from native spices.
